Joe Elliott Director, Business Development

Joe serves as the Director of Business Development for Heaton Smith. He develops and directs all business development goals and strategies and manages the decision-making process for each prospective client. Through research and prospect assessment, Joe identifies nonprofit institutions that want to either enhance their existing program or create a strategic donor-centered gift planning program. He brings nearly twenty-five years of for-profit business development, sales and operations experience to his position, with a strong record as a senior executive in creating strategic value and bottom line results.
For a decade prior to joining Heaton Smith, Joe helped companies improve their sales performance through sales training, coaching, leadership development and executive decision support to over 2,500 sales professionals and executives in both Fortune 1000 and private companies, including AAA, American Power Conversion, APS Healthcare, AT&T Mobility, Fisher Scientific, Harvard Bioscience and Hewlett-Packard.
During the late 1990s, Joe provided business development services and raised private equity for technology companies. During this period, he was appointed by the Board of one of those companies to steer the organization through the tech bubble and the 9/11 crises as its President and COO.
Joe also served as COO and Vice President of Business Development, Sales and Marketing for a technology firm recognized by Inc. 500 as one of the fastest growing companies in America. While there, he worked in Europe, Central and South America and Asia developing business opportunities with clients, manufacturers and suppliers that positioned the company to enjoy formidable growth. Of note, he successfully worked with the U.S. Congress over a 15-month period to secure funding for an unparalleled international project to directly address the humanitarian and economic after-effects of the 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe in northern Ukraine.
He graduated with honors from The University of Tennessee with a B.S. in Business Administration and was selected for and successfully completed Senior Executive programs at Harvard University on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution.
Joe and his wife of 24 years have four children and reside in Atlanta. They are all active in their community and around the globe. He and his family have made multiple trips to Guatemala to assist Medical Missions Ministries in providing medical aid to remote villages throughout the country and were among the first-responders after Katrina, delivering truckloads of food, tools and supplies to Waveland, Mississippi. In addition, he has served as a member of the Board of Directors for Vision Foundation, Inc.
