Joseph S. Beyel
Senior Consulting Associate



Joe serves as a senior consulting associate for Heaton Smith Group and concentrates his efforts in secondary and higher education institutions and academic medical organizations. Joe has thirty-six years of institutional advancement experience in higher education and academic medicine and fully appreciates and comprehends the complexities these organizations face in reaching regional and national constituencies.

Since the mid-1970’s, Joe’s career has encompassed all facets of philanthropic development and relationship building for several of the United States most prestigious public and private academic institutions. In 2006, Joe moved to the UK after being appointed director of development at The University of Nottingham. He returned to the United States in 2009 and continued to serve Nottingham as its director of international development. Joe was responsible for the overall leadership and management of Nottingham’s philanthropic fund- raising and alumni relations in North America and Asia.

For the six years before joining Nottingham, Joe served as the vice president for university advancement at the University of Louisville. As vice president, he provided strategic and operational management for Louisville’s philanthropic development program and its alumni relations, public relations and legislative affairs activities. Prior to the University of Louisville, Joe held the position of vice chancellor for medical development and alumni affairs at Duke University. During his tenure, overall philanthropy doubled and philanthropic gifts from individuals tripled and a $550 Million campaign was launched.

In addition to the above, Joe successfully led the development program at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan and held junior and senior development positions at the University of Rochester, the University of Chicago and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Joe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland and a Master of Science degree in Liberal Studies from Nazareth College in Rochester, New York. Joe and his wife, Maureen, are married thirty-seven years and have one child, Peter, a 2L at the University of Colorado College of Law.
