Wm. David Smith
President and CEO

Dave founded Heaton Smith Group, LLC in January 2009 and brings nearly fifteen years of experience in the nonprofit sector to his position. Prior to founding Heaton Smith, he served as a Regional Vice President for Thompson & Associates. Dave has worked with nonprofit institutions and their donors in the Southeast, Mid Atlantic, Northeast, Midwest and Pacific regions. He has served clients representing a wide range of nonprofit institutions including healthcare, arts and culture, religion and independent school sectors.

Prior to his career in legacy and charitable planning services, Dave served extensively in a management capacity in the corporate and nonprofit sectors. He led an inner-city community development corporation located in Atlanta and served as a Regional Marketing Director for a publically traded corporation located in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Dave works extensively with individuals, couples and families to help them determine and articulate their legacy and estate planning objectives in accessible language. This discovery process helps donors bring clarity to their overall vision, values and goals with regard to their family, financial and philanthropic legacies. Through his work, Dave has helped secure more than one hundred million dollars for the philanthropic community. His work includes individuals and couples with modest means as well as high-net-worth individuals and families with private foundations and family offices.

A native of Kentucky, Dave graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.S. in Psychology. He was selected for the 2001 Leadership Atlanta class and successfully completed the program in April 2002. In addition, Dave served as a member of the Board of Directors for Families First and the Collin-Graham Foundation. He is a member of the Boston-based Legacy Companies, Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, Georgia Planned Giving Council and the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP).

Dave and his family reside in Atlanta and are active in their community.
